Frequently Asked Questions

How do I drop a pin?

Tap and hold anywhere on the map for half a second. A blue ring will appear while you hold — when it fills, a pin drops.

Why are wind times sometimes not showing?

Wind data is fetched live from the GFS forecast model. It can take a few seconds on first load. If it doesn't appear, tap the menu (☰) → Live winds → "Refresh winds now".

Why does the fastest route sometimes say "GC is fastest"?

This means the great circle at your selected flight level is already the quickest path with the current winds. No detour or altitude change would save time.

What unit is the distance in?

Both nautical miles (nm) and kilometres (km) are shown.

Can I add waypoints in the middle of a route?

Yes — tap and hold close to the existing line and the new pin will be inserted between the two nearest waypoints. Useful for routing around airspace.

Is my location data stored anywhere?

Flight Path Distance respects your privacy and does not collect, store, or share any personal data on our servers — because we don't run any servers.

Data used by the app

• Location: When you tap the location button, your device's GPS coordinates are used only to centre the map. This data stays on your device and is never transmitted anywhere.
• Map tiles: The app downloads satellite imagery from Esri (arcgisonline.com).
• Wind data: The app fetches GFS weather data from Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com).
• City search: Location names are queried via OpenStreetMap Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org).

These third-party services may log standard HTTP request metadata (IP address, timestamp) according to their own privacy policies. The app does not transmit any personally identifying information to these services.

No analytics, no advertising, no tracking

The app contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising networks, and no user tracking of any kind.

Children's privacy

The app does not collect any data from any users, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
